The 5 days of Diwali and their significance

Diwali is one of the most anticipated festivals lasting over 5 days and many ceremonies.

One of the biggest Hindu festivals it marks the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. It is about celebrating the win of good over evil. 


There are many other traditions associated with Diwali, it marks the win of Lord Krishna over Narakasura, and the coming home of Goddess Lakshmi. 


People celebrate Diwali by dressing in best finest clothes, decorating their house, buying jewellery and electronics and giving gifts to family and friends. 


Diwali parties and melas are also very common during this time.

These are the 5 days of Diwali and how they are celebrated.


Day 1 Dhanteras- the word ‘Dhanteras’ translates to wealth and prosperity. Dhanteras marks the day the Goddess of health and medicine Dhanvantari came out of the ocean with the gift of Ayurveda to humanity. It also marks the day Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean with a pot of gold.  


The houses are cleaned, painted and decorated with rangoli and flowers to welcome Goddess Lakshmi into the homes. 


On this day people shop for new utensils, gold, or silver to bring luck and prosperity.


Day 2 Choti Diwali or Narak Chaturdasi-  this is the day that Lord Krishna gained victory over Narakasura, Bengalis on this day celebrate Kali Puja and Jains celebrate Mahavira reaching nirvana. 


On this day diyas are lit and a customary bath with oils and uptan is taken early in the morning.


Day 3 Lakshmi Puja and Diwali- this is the main day of Diwali festivities. People dress in their finest clothes and jewellery and in the evening puja of Goddess Lakshmi is performed. This is followed by a feast, exchanging gifts and card party. The family gets together to indulge in sweets and snacks.

Day 4 Govardhan Puja- this was the day when Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan parvat and saved the people of Mathura. Varieties of bhog are prepared and offered to Lord Krishna.  In Gujarat, this day is celebrated as Bestu Varas or the first day of the new year.


Day 5 Bhai Dooj- or bhai beej on this day brothers visit their sisters. The sister prays for the well-being of the brother by doing a puja, then they share a meal and sweets. 


Apart from these, there are many other cultures and traditions followed by different communities of the country. 


Diwali is the festival of lights and homecoming, it is the time of the year when we exchange gifts, count our blessings and show gratitude.
